bioMaking your way through the dirt roads in the remote North West village back in 1982 you would have never imagined a place like Madidi would birth one of the most astounding lyricists in South Africa right now. Raised by two hard working baTswana parents, Hakeem was always destined to be a lyricist following in the footsteps of his drummer father who led a soul band in the 80’s.
Zoom forward to the present and you have a well seasoned young man in his twenties grappling with marriage and a burgeoning rap career balanced by a fashion entrepreneurship with fellow band member, Maliq. Together forming half of the well respected rap group Ba4za they lead and head the House of Hip Hop which promises to not just be a fashion outlet but an experience for any young person who steps between its doors.
Making music has not only increased Hakeem’s outlook into the music industry but has broadened his view on music as a whole. Looking to break barriers and shake stereotypes which he has done already by switching back and forth into vernacular writing with the mouth dropping joint, “Vele” recorded for his 2008 release Pens & Swords. His is the changing of music and how people perceive Hip Hop as a medium that changes society starting with tackling issues otherwise relegated to small talk.
